With that being said, workout routines will allow you to increase the amount of calories that you burn. It will also allow you to maintain/increase lean muscle mass while you lose bodyfat.
Starvation diets don't work. If you don't eat enough, you'll lose lean muscle mass along with the bodyfat. An extreme example of this is anorexia. Anorexics have very bodyfat, but also very little muscle mass. The key is to maintain or build muscle mass (not like a bodybuilder, so don't worry). Lean muscle mass will burn calories even while you're just watching tv, sleeping, and not working out.
You can expect to lose safely lose a pound or two every week without losing muscle mass in the process.
