Besides meds, how can I help my 93 year old wheel chair bound dad with constipation problem?Incorporate foods that are high in fiber (fruits, veggies, whole grain breads, bran, raisins, prunes) and drinks lots of water to get things moving. Also, if possible, get him up and walking around. The least little bit of exercise can loosen up his bowels a little bit.
You can look at the nutrition label of things and it will tell you how much fiber is in a product. Try to shoot for about 30grams fiber/day. Benefiber may also work, which is over the counter. FiberOne is a good brand of products to try. "Light" English Muffins have 8 grams of fiber in one muffin.
I can go on for days I work in a hospital filled with constipated older adults. You are right it is probably a mobility problem. At my nursing home sometimes if we can even get th person to stand it can stimulate peristalsis (intenstinal mobility) and sometimes within the hour they will have a bowel movement. I dont know how bad your fathers mobility problem is, but if you could even get him to stand for a little while it should help along with the enema and other interventions you have done.
But, be aware there is a difference between stool softeners and laxatives. Try to stay away from stimulate laxatives because the body can become so used to them that a person will never be able to have a bowel movement without taking one.
Hope this helpsYou could just try to get him as much excercise that you can while being safe to try and get his metabolism working a bit faster. And if you can maybe try to feed him some bananas or warm water that has helped my grandfather who had the same problem :)
Good Luck! And your family will be in our prayers.
And yes if he can do this position without hurting himself go for it!Another component of your dad's problem might also be the amount of food he's taking in. Often people get an idea that one should have a BM every XX days. That can vary a lot and if your dad isn't taking in much in the way of solid food, don't expect much in the way of solid stool.
Do go with the fruits and veggies. And dried fruits are often best, simply because the volume is not as great as fresh food.
Take good care of yourself too, okay?A warm bath works great!
