What's the point of opening the hips in yoga?On the side of each hip there is a series of small muscles called the hip flexors. They are the stabilizing muscles for movements of the legs, mainly in the walking and running upward motion of the legs. It's important to strengthen them. They are small and easily overtaxed during any program. You'll likey feel some soreness on the outside of both hips after working those, but go slow and you'll be OK with it.I would say it is a basic belief in Hatha yoga that anywhere muscular tightness (inflexibility) exists, it inhibits, or outright blocks, the flow of energy.

("Energy" in this context could be anything ranging between something quasi metaphysical to simple blood circulation. Your choice).

Thus, whether it is hip openers, chest openers, or anything else, a key goal is to remove conditions that inhibit, and to hopefully facilatate, the healthy flow of "energy."

In my own subjective experience, after doing hip openers, I notice even the simple act of walking feels easier.
It's great not only prior to hiking, but intermittantly during a hike, and afterwards, also.
